Library

We run a reference library.

The Department’s library is on the ground floor of the Department and intended for intensive use during your studies. With over 20,000 volumes, it covers the full spectrum of Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology as well as the historical basis of the subject of Volkskunde, with an emphasis on German-language literature.

As a reference library for the cultural sciences, the resource enables you to acquire the discipline’s fundamentals and methods “off the shelf”. You can advance your knowledge of the diverse areas of research relating to everyday culture, with a special emphasis on the Department's own specialisms. You can also find out about relevant professional fields and follow the development of Volkskunde as well as associated discussions and paradigm shifts. Further, considerable space is devoted to literature concerning related disciplines in the cultural and social sciences as well as the study of history. Relevant English-language publications are also available. The display of new acquisitions and specialist journals provides an insight into current research and discussions.

The reading room provides ample space and time for delving into the literature on site. It is also hosts two work stations, each equipped with a PC for catalogue research as well as folders with details of literature selected specifically for current modules. Finally, the library also offers further reading for the current semester and informative materials on specific courses.

On the first floor of the Department, a photocopier is available for copying books, newspapers and other materials from the library. Simply ask the library supervisor for further details. Books can be borrowed over the weekend.
