What is the "STEOP"?
The introductory and orientation phase of the Bachelor's degree program in European Ethnology is intended to serve as a basis for making a personal assessment of the choice of degree program and to provide an overview of the main contents of the degree program. It comprises two courses amounting to 9 ECTS credits. The same applies to the second field of study chosen as part of the compulsory electives.
How many ECTS can be completed by the end of the STEOP?
In addition to the courses that are allocated to the introductory and orientation phase, further examinations from the compulsory subjects, the compulsory electives and the free electives amounting to 22 ECTS credits can be completed. A total of 31 ECTS credits can therefore be completed in the first semester, whereby the registration requirements specified in the curriculum under § 3 (2) must be observed when selecting courses.
What happens if I don't pass the STEOP?
If a STEOP subject is not successfully completed after a maximum of four attempts, you will be blocked from studying for a period of one year. The STEOP can then be taken again.

Courses may overlap during the course of the degree program. In general, STEOP subjects should be given priority over other courses. Courses that serve as a prerequisite for attending other courses should also be completed in good time so as not to hinder the course of study.
What should I do if I don't get a place or only a place on the waiting list for a course?
For didactic or safety reasons, the number of participants for each type of course is limited. Even if no fixed place has been allocated, it is advisable to attend the first unit of the course and get in touch with the lecturer.
What happens if an examination is not passed on the first attempt?
There are three repetitions or four possible attempts for each examination. The last examination attempt must be conducted by an examination board. This applies to course examinations and final examinations. This board examination is held and assessed by an examination senate consisting of at least two examiners and a chairperson. Students have the right to choose the date of the board examination and to propose the members of the examination board.
What is the difference between a bound elective subject and a supplementary subject? Do the same provisions for changing degree programs apply to supplementary subjects as those listed under § 2 (4) b in the curriculum?
Compulsory electives amounting to 24 ECTS credits can be chosen from the following subjects: Ancient History and Classical Studies, English/American Studies, Archaeology, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, German Studies, History, Greek, Art History, Latin, Philosophy, Romance Studies (French), Romance Studies (Italian), Romance Studies (Spanish), Russian, Slovenian, Linguistics. Students who have completed the compulsory elective subject within the first year of study can switch to the study program chosen as the compulsory elective subject without losing time or credits. Instead of completing the compulsory elective in one of the above-mentioned subjects, a supplementary subject (information modeling or sociology) amounting to 24 ECTS credits can be completed. In this case, the provisions for changing degree programs do not apply.
What should I do if I want to write my Bachelor's thesis?
The Bachelor's thesis is written as part of a course, whereby the course type may not be a "lecture".
